Nomi illirici nelle isole britanniche - nomi di fiumi e anche il nome più antico della Gran Bretagna (O. Crawford: Pokorny 1941)

Tuttavia Pokorny trova un gran numero di nomi illirici nelle isole britanniche - soprattutto fiumi tra cui il Severn, il Tay, Tamigi e Farar, ma anche nomi tribali, Lugi a Sutherland, Epidii in Kintyre e Pitti i nostri vecchi amici, così come il nome più vecchio della Gran Bretagna, Pretanikai Nesoi.

For Pokorny finds a number of Illyrian names in the British Isles — principally rivers, including the Severn, Tay, Thames and Farar, but also tribal appellations, the Lugi in Sutherland, the Epidii in Kintyre and our old friends the Picts as well as the oldest recorded name of Britain, Pretanikai Nesoi.

Chi era Julius Pokorny ?

Julius Pokorny è stato un linguista austriaco ( 1887 - 1970), specialista delle lingue celtiche, professore  nelle università di Zurigo e di Monaco.

Ha lasciato opere fondamentali sulle lingue indogermaniche e in particolare sull'antico irlandese, tra cui: Altirische Grammatik (1925; 2a ed. 1967); Vergleichendes Wörterbuch der indogermanischen Sprachen (3 voll., 1927-32, con A. Walde); Altkeltische Dichtungen (1944); Indogermanisches etymologisches Wörterbuch (2 voll., 1948-69).
